Literary Titans – Book Review

Gun Fights, Ghosts and Goannas by Gary Wood chronicles an extraordinary journey through Queensland, blending adventure, culture, and history. Frustrated by the endless grind of working to make a living, Gary set off on a bold bike expedition. His courage was rewarded with unforgettable experiences and profound insights. From uncovering the history of Dead Man’s Island—the final resting place of the first European to die in the region—to revelling in Central Queensland’s vibrant wildlife, Gary’s odyssey captures the heart of exploration. As he roams the landscapes, he reflects on life’s connections and the ties between his past and present.

Gun Fights, Ghosts and Goannas

The desire to be free and in control or our own destiny’s is an in build human desire. But we seem to have fallen into a nightmare of giving away this freedom to earn a living and buy flashy ornaments. The dream of riding a motorcycle around Australia is an inbuilt desire to be free. My focus on family, qualifications, career and mortgage conspired to push this dream out of my mind. Life had stopped being fun for me, and I could see it wouldn’t get better unless I changed my thinking.

It started with a dream

One night while lying in my hammock, sipping red wine, and listening to music, a song from my past came over the speaker. It was a message from my younger self, reminding me of my dreams.
I set a goal, got a motorcycle and some camping gear, and within two years was on a solo motorcycle adventure through Queensland.

True adventure

This book is more than a motorcycle travel story, it’s an adventure through the heart of Queensland and the soul of Australia. Along the way, I learn the secret of life, lose money betting on chickens, and solve the murder of the Swaggie from the song Waltzing Matilda. My message to the reader is that it’s never too late to set and achieve goals. If I can do it, anyone can, and it’s easier than you think. Just twist the throttle and look out for kangaroos.
