The Sense of Place series is a collection of short visual and literary essays exploring towns and communities across regional Australia. Rather than lists of attractions or things to do, these stories focus on how a place feels — its landscape, culture, and the reasons it exists.
Each essay introduces a single Australian community, offering a quiet, reflective snapshot of its character and history. Taken together, the series builds a rich, visual picture of Australia today, shaped by the places and people that formed its culture.
A Sense of Place looks beyond the obvious. These essays explore the untold essence of a town, how it presents itself and why the town came to be — its geography, purpose, and rhythm.
This reflection forms part of an ongoing Sense of Place series on regional Australia. Expanded versions of selected stories are collected in my books.
The essays are designed to spark curiosity — enough to make you want to visit, but not so much that there’s nothing left to discover when you arrive.

Hey Gary, the sense of place links to charters towns and Ravenswood aren’t working.
Thanks Arran, I’m still working on those stories. They’ll be ready by the end of the week. I hope you like the stories. Cheers Gary
