A brief History of Bowen
The town of Bowen is one of the oldest in North Queensland, established in 1861. It was once considered for the role of the main northern city, mostly due to it having the only natural deep water port north of Brisbane. You will have noticed its extra wide streets, an indication that when it was surveyed there were big plans for the town. During its early years, it was responsible for a great deal of the development of the northern part of the state of Queensland before the Port of Townsville was dredged. Bowen saw the export of coal, minerals and cattle in the early days. Today it is one of the most spectacular coastal towns in Queensland, with arguably five of the best beaches in the State. You can see my review of the top twelve beaches in three of the top five are in Bowen.
